Boy Swallows Universe
Event Collateral - Concept
This brief was to make consistent event collateral for an event held at a list of venues. I chose the stage play based on the Trent Dalton’s book, Boy Swallows Universe, that was recently postponed at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

Project Summary
My collateral style has been inspired by the Swiss Typography movement. Although the colours are not traditionally Swiss , I have tried to keep the variance of colour to a minimum outside of the design element I created for the inside of the hole/circle and swirls.
The black was chosen to depict the universe and the colour to be a statement piece that can be seen peeking through the black ‘universe’. The bright colours were based on the book cover and were chosen to associate the event with the book. I used Helvetica font and a strong grid set up to tie in the Swiss style more succinctly. I used a number of columns and rows to ensure that text started and finished with similar spacing and played with heavier headings being confined to a box within the grid. I played around with the grid formations a lot.
To break up the heavy text I used the cursive ‘Universe’ with a hand seen to be writing this. In the book the main character’s brother is a mute due to a traumatic event in his childhood and communicates with his brother through writing in the air with his finger. I made the hand black and white to reflect the style of the Swiss movement, as a lot of the design within this movement were black and white and quite simple and angular. I captured this with my ‘Universe’ and swirl design elements.
